Kaposi's Sarcoma

Viral-Driven Cell Line Established from Human Blood

A Kaposi's sarcoma-associated herpesvirus (KSHV) positive, Epstein-Barr virus (EBV) negative cell line has been established from the peripheral blood of an HIV seronegative patient with primary effusion lymphomas.

"Apart from EBV and human T-cell leukemia virus (HTLV)-positive cell lines, this is the only other report of a presumably viral-driven and maintained cell line established from human peripheral blood," wrote Chris Boshoff, Institute of Cancer Research, London, United Kingdom, and colleagues ("Establishing a KSHV+ Cell Line (BCP-1) from Peripheral Blood and Characterizing Its Growth in Nod/SCID Mice," Blood, 1998;91:1671-1679).
