According to an abstract submitted by the authors to the Royal College of Physicians of Edinburgh Consensus Conference on Platelet Transfusion, held November 27-28, 1997, in Edinburgh, United Kingdom, "The ability of platelets to shed microvesicles on the site of injury is important for the formation of haemostatic plug. During processing and storage of platelet concentrates various degrees of microvesiculation occur which may cause deficiency in platelet function.
