"The findings in the present study indicate that both HTLV-I and HTLV-II were present in Africa more than a decade prior to their recognition in Western blood donor populations," wrote Edward Tabor, U.S. Food and Drug Administration ("Human T-Lymphotropic Virus Types I and II in Africa in 1969," [letter] Transfusion, 1998;38:612-613).
The high prevalence of HTLV-I in areas of Japan and HTLV-I and HTLV-II in Africa have led investigators to suggest that the viruses may have their origins in either of the two areas.
