Viral Genetic Factors Regulate Number of Genome Copies in Latently Infected Neurons

The latent genome copy number may be an important parameter for subsequent induced reactivation of herpes simplex virus (HSV) in vivo.

Viral genetic factors that determine in vivo reactivation efficiencies of fully replication competent wild-type HSV strains have not been identified, noted N.M. Sawtell, Children's Hospital Medical Center, Cincinnati, Ohio, and colleagues.

A common laboratory strain, KOS reactivates in vivo at lower efficiencies than either strain 17syn+ or strain McKrae (Strelow et al., J Gen Virol, 1994;75:2475-2480 and others).
