Isolates in Japanese Hemophiliacs Are Similar to Isolates from West Africa

Most of the hepatitis G virus isolates found in Japanese hemophiliacs believed to have been infected by imported blood products were similar to isolates from West Africa.

The isolates were not similar to those from the United States or from Europe, although most of the individuals are believed to have been infected by imported blood products from the United States or Europe, indicated Hidenori Toyoda of Japan's Nagoya University School of Medicine and colleagues ("GB Virus C/Hepatitis G Virus Isolates in Japanese Haemophiliacs and Their Origins," Thrombosis and Haemostasis, 1998;80:242-245).
