Prophylactic Use of Vancomycin Is Not Supported

Vancomycin, used along with catheter insertion, decreased central venous catheter bloodstream infections in infants, but may still be inappropriate.

Prophylactic use of vancomycin lead to the development of vancomycin-resistant organisms, indicated M. Fallat, Kosair Children's Hospital, Louisville, Kentucky, and colleagues ("Central Venous Catheter Bloodstream Infections in the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit," Journal of Pediatric Surgery, September 1998;33(9):1383-1387).
