American Red Cross Opens High-Tech Plasma Center

A plasma donation center in Erie County, New York, has planned to use technology that can virtually eliminate viruses such as HIV and hepatitis from the plasma part of the blood.

The center, which was opened in the town of Clarence, by the American Red Cross, plans to use a detergent treatment approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) that dissolves certain viruses while leaving needed plasma proteins intact.

The treatment "provides an added layer of protection for patients who receive transfusions of plasma," said Christopher Lamb, Red Cross.
