According to an abstract submitted by the authors to the 38th Annual Conference on Cardiovascular Disease Epidemiology and Prevention, held March 18-21, 1998, in Santa Fe, New Mexico, "In June 1996, the U.S. Public Health Service first recommended the use of combinations of antiretroviral agents as PEP following certain occupational HIV exposures. Because of the paucity of information on the use or toxicity of antiretroviral drugs in persons not infected with HIV, the HIV PEP Registry was established by CDC, Glaxo Wellcome Inc., and Merck & Co., Inc., to collect information about the safety and outcome of taking these drugs for HIV PEP.
