PCR Is Specific and Sensitive for HIV-1 Subtypes

A polymerase chain reaction (PCR) assay can reliably detect distinct HIV-1 subtypes, researchers report.

Sequence-based detection of viral RNA or DNA is increasingly used to reduce the window period of infectivity of donated blood.

Stefan Bosbach, Swiss National Center for Retroviruses, University of Zurich, Switzerland, and colleagues developed a 5' nuclease PCR assay (TaqMan automation) for the rapid detection of HIV-1 RNA in plasma samples.

They presented their research in a poster at the Blood Safety-Europe Conference held November 16-17, 1998, in Lisbon, Portugal.
