Case Highlights Prevention Is Best Treatment

A recently reported case of cutaneous leishmaniasis highlights the increasing importance of protozoan disease.

Maria B. Lee and Holly M. Gilbert, St. Vincent's Hospital and Medical Center of New York reported on the 41-year-old man who developed cutaneous leishmaniasis after a trip to South America ("Current Approach to Leishmaniasis," Infections in Medicine, 1999;16:34,37-45).

The patient, a U.S. citizen, presented to a New York City hospital with left inguinal lymphadenopathy and a left lower extremity lesion of about two weeks' duration. He recently had returned from a a trip to the Amazon, where he spent time hiking and boating; he recalled...
