The new symbol for AIDS is a dam about to give way.
The image comes from hard-working AIDS writer Laurie Garrett. Her latest polemic, intended to shatter the current popular complacency about the HIV pandemic, appears as the star-studded cover story "The Virus at The End of The World" in the March 1999 issue of Esquire magazine.
The dam, Garrett wrote, is the thin line of defense now holding back HIV: the combination drug regimens known as highly active antiretroviral therapy (HAART).
