A. Tandberg and colleagues determined the incidence and complications related to manual removal of the placenta ("Manual Removal of the Placenta - Incidence and Clinical Significance," Acta Obstetricia Et Gynecologica Scandinavica, January 1999;78(1):33-36).
The researchers performed a review of hospital medical records from 1990 throughout 1994. For comparison purposes, they used 1,502 vaginal deliveries from 1984-1992.
