Efficacy of Pre-Operative Donation Studied

Personal pre-operative blood donation should be made more widely available for elective surgery patients, researchers indicate.

An expanding method in transfusion medicine, personal pre-operative blood donation helps avoid complications associated with homologous blood transfusion.

Almomen et al. performed a study to evaluate the possibility of establishing a personal, pre-operative blood donation program ("Pre-Operative Blood Donation: A Saudi Experience," Saudi Medical Journal, February 1999;20(2):162-166).

Ninety-seven personal pre-operative blood donor patients and 106 controls were selected after obtaining their consents. ...
