Discordant Blood, Urine Test Results Discussed

In a clinical study of 826 people at risk for HIV, blood and urine tests for antibodies to HIV-1 were discordant in 10 patients.

The data were presented by Dr. Howard Urnovitz, Calypte Biomedical Corp., at the 31st Annual Oak Ridge Conference of the American Association for Clinical Chemistry (AACC), held April 23-24, 1999, in San Jose, California. The study was conducted by Calypte in conjunction with Independent Reference Laboratory.

In six of these individuals tested, antibodies to HIV-1 could be detected in urine but not in the matched blood sample. These six subjects have been described as urine positive/serum negative, or UPSN. In the...
