"Hip and Knee Replacements Under Epidural Anesthesia - Is it Still the Gold Standard of Care?."

According to an abstract submitted by the authors to the 52nd Postgraduate Assembly of the New York State Society of Anesthesiologists, Inc., held December 12-16, 1998, in New York, New York, "Epidural anesthesia has been established as the gold standard of care for hip and knee replacement operations when compared to general anesthesia in multiple studies. These studies documented significant reductions in estimated blood loss, and improvements in rehabilitation parameters, bone cement intercalation, and morbidity and mortality when hypotensive epidural anesthesia followed by epidural analgesia was used, compared to general anesthesia followed by IV narcotic analgesia.
