According to the authors' abstract of an article published in European Journal of Immunology, "Antigen stimulation induces specific CD4 T cells to change from a resting phenotype (CD45RC⁺) to a 'memory' phenotype (CD45RC^-), an isoform switch that is reversible and regulated by persisting antigen. We show here that CD4 T cells responsible for mediating allograft rejection undergo a similar CD45RC⁺ to CD45RC^- switch irrespective of whether antigen priming results in sensitization or tolerance in vivo.
