Chronic SAD/SCD Shows Ineffective Erythropoiesis

Recent study results confirm the potential effectiveness of bone marrow transplantation for sickle cell disease hematopoietic therapy.

Marie-Jose Blouin and colleagues of Canada's Institut de Recherches Cliniques de Montreal, investigated the mechanisms of sickle cell disease (SCD) hematopoietic/erythropoietic defects in a murine model ("Altered Hematopoiesis in Murine Sickle Cell Disease," Blood, August 15, 1999;94(4):1451-1459).

The researchers used bone marrow, spleen, and/or peripheral blood from the transgenic SAD mouse model, which closely reproduces the biochemical and physiological disorders found in human SCD.
