In utero Gene Delivery Successfully Accomplished in Sheep

Ultrasound-guided, percutaneous adenovirus vector administration into the umbilical vein successfully delivered transgenes to fetal sheep.

M. Themis, H. Schneider, and colleagues from several colleges in the United Kingdom and from Transgene, Strasbourg, France, investigated in utero somatic gene therapy for the treatment of inherited disorders. Their study results were reported in the journal Gene Therapy ("Successful Expression of (beta)-Galactosidase and Factor IX Transgenes in Fetal and Neonatal Sheep after Ultrasound-Guided Percutaneous Adenovirus Vector Administration into the Umbilical Vein," Gene Therapy, 1999;6(7):1239-48).
