Thrombin Has Potent Angiogenic Action

Endothelial cells exposed to thrombin are sensitized to the mitogenic activity of vascular endothelial growth factor, researchers indicated.

N.E. Tsopanoglou and M.E. Maragoudakis, University of Patras, Greece, investigated the interaction between thrombin and vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF), the specific endothelial cell mitogen and key angiogenic factor ("On the Mechanism of Thrombin-Induced Angiogenesis. Potentiation of Vascular Endothelial Growth Factor Activity on Endothelial Cells by Up-Regulation of Its Receptors," J Biol Chem, 1999;274(34):23969-76).
