Meta-Analysis Provides Estimate of Cell Salvage Effectiveness

A meta-analysis of all published randomized trials involving cell salvage, recently compiled by the International Study of Perioperative Transfusion (ISPOT) Investigators, provides a current estimate of the effectiveness of the technique.

The report is useful in guiding clinical practice, according to the authors.

Representing the team, lead author C. Huet of INSERM, France, noted that concern about risks of allogeneic transfusion has led to an interest in methods for decreasing perioperative transfusion.
