Published in Blood Weekly, November 1st, 1999

Insulin-like growth factor 1 may be a survival factor for resting cord blood T cells, researchers from Hong Kong suggested.

Apoptosis plays an important role in cellular homeostasis, including that of T cells, noted W. Tu, University of Hong Kong, and colleagues.

Previously, Tu et al. showed that insulin-like growth factor 1 (IGF-1) could promote the maturation of neonatal T cells and regulate cord blood naive T-cell differentiation towards Th1 profile. Although IGF-1 has been reported to have an anti-apoptotic effect effect on murine hemopoietic cells, little is understood about its anti-apoptotic roles in T cells.
