Red Cell Alloimmunization Is a Potential Problem

Plasma transfusion may cause red cell alloimmunization in some individuals, researchers report.

O. Chuku and colleagues, Howard University Hospital, Washington, D.C., investigated the presence and amount of red cells in plasma products already prepared for transfusion. They also determined the significance of any red cells present in terms of the possibility of red cell alloimmunization.

Chuku et al. reported their findings at the American Association of Blood Banks 52nd Annual Meeting held November 6-10, 1999, in San Francisco, California, USA.
