More Errors Occur with Western Blot HIV-1 Antibody Tests

According to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention's (CDC) model performance evaluation program, Western blot (WB) HIV-1 antibody testing has a higher error rate than does enzyme immunoassay (EIA).

A.K. Stankovic and colleagues from the CDC, Atlanta, Georgia, USA, conducted a total of 18 performance surveys from September 1990 to January 1999 which were analyzed according to the five participant laboratory types: blood bank, hospital, health department, independent, and 'other.'
