Interleukin-10 Plays Immunomodulatory Role

Interleukin-10 plays an immunomodulatory role in the inhibition of cellular immune responses associated with the xenotransplantation, according to a recent report.

Pigs are being used as an alternative source of tissues for humans. Thus, H.S. Deol and colleagues expressed their interest in the xenotransplantation of fetal pig islet-like cell clusters (ICC) into type I diabetic patients ("Effect of interleukin-10 on human anti-porcine xenogeneic cellular response in vitro," Transplantation, January 15, 2000;69(1):112-119).
