Thrombopoietin and Its Receptor Not Involved In Disease Progression

Neither thrombopoietin (TPO) nor its receptor, c-mpl, play a significant role in the progression of chronic myelogenous leukemia (CML), according to researchers.

Because TPO and c-mpl support the proliferation of multiple types of immature hematopoietic progenitor cells and induce clonal growth of leukemic cells, K. Kaban and colleagues investigated whether overexpression of (TPO) or c-mpl might correlate with progression of CML, disease aggressiveness, or response to therapy ("Expression of thrombopoietin and its receptor (C-mpl) in chronic myelogenous leukemia - Correlation with disease progression and response to therapy," Cancer, 2000;88(3):570-576).
