Assay May Be Valuable for Screening Plasma Products

Aventis Behring, King of Prussia, Pennsylvania, presented to the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) Blood Products Advisory Committee information from its ongoing investigation into the use of proprietary polymerase chain reaction technology to screen for the presence of certain key viruses in plasma used in life-saving products.

The data indicate PCR screening may be valuable in identifying the presence of hepatitis B virus in plasma that has already cleared previous serology tests that screen for hepatitis B surface antigen, according to the company.
