Doxycycline May Reduce Monocyte/Macrophage Expression

Researchers have found evidence that doxycycline (Dox) reduces monocyte/macrophage expression of matrix metalloproteinase (MMP)-9 mRNA and suppresses activation of proMMP-2 after translation.

MMPs, which are important in the pathogenesis of abdominal aortic aneurysms (AAAs), are inhibited by Dox in vitro. Dox has been observed to suppress elastase-induced AAA development in rodents.
