Combination of Cytoprotection, Anticytokine Therapies is Effective

Researchers have found evidence supporting the idea that myelodysplastic syndrome (MDS) can be successfully treated with cytoprotection and anticytokine therapies.

A. Raza, of the Rush Cancer Institute, Illinois, and colleagues studied 35 MDS patients registered on protocol MDS 96-02. The patients were orally administered 800 mg of pentoxifylline three times a day and 500 mg of ciprofloxacin twice a day. After 12 weeks of therapy, patients who did not fully respond to this treatment were additionally treated with 4 mg of dexamethasone, taken orally each morning for four weeks.
