Diaspirin Cross-Linked Hemoglobin: A Postsurgical Alternative?

Diaspirin cross-linked hemoglobin (DCLHb) can help some patients avoid erythrocyte exposure after cardiac surgery, according to researchers.

M.L. Lamy and colleagues in Belgium examined the efficacy, safety, hemodynamic effects, and plasma persistence of DCLHb as a potential alternative to allogeneic blood transfusions for cardiac surgery patients ("Randomized trial of diaspirin cross-linked hemoglobin solution as an alternative to blood transfusion after cardiac surgery," Anesthesiology, 2000;92(3):646-656).
