Economic Collapse Spawned Dangerous Human Tissue Business

A storefront dental office in Los Angeles, California, and home-based offices in Florida and in Detroit, Michigan, peddled bone, brain linings, and other tissue from Russia after the country's economic collapse in the early 1990s, The Orange County Register reported.

However, some of the parts were infected with hepatitis, leading directly to U.S. regulation of the human tissue business, the newspaper said.

In 1993, a tissue sample from the Los Angeles office tested positive for hepatitis B, the Register reported May 21, 2000.
