Ganciclovir Alone as Effective as Combination Therapy in Preventing Cytomegalovirus Infection

Ganciclovir (GCV) given alone is as effective as combination therapy incorporating acyclovir (ACV) with cytomegalovirus (CMV) immunoglobulin (CMVIg) in preventing CMV infection in heart transplant recipients, researchers suggest.

"CMV infection is a major cause of morbidity in heart transplant patients," Ainat Beniaminovitz and colleagues from Columbia University, New York, reported. "With adequate prophylaxis, the incidence and severity of clinical infection can be significantly reduced.
