Novel System Enables CD34+ Stem Cell Generation for Therapeutic Applications

Researchers in Japan have developed a long-term in vitro system for producing human cord blood CD34+ stem cells from Lin-CD34- cells.

"Human CD34- hematopoietic stem cells (HSCs) have been identified as potential precursors of CD34+ HSCs by using xenogeneic transplantation systems," stated K. Ando and colleagues, Tokai University, Japan. "However, the properties of CD34+ cells generated from CD34- cells have not been precisely analyzed due to the lack of an in vitro system in which CD34+ cells are continuously produced from CD34- cells.
