Virus DNA Detected in Transplanted Patients is Clinically Prognostic

Detection of Epstein-Barr virus (EBV) DNA in the sera of transplanted patients is useful for clinical follow-up of patients who may be at risk of post-transplant lymphoproliferative disease (PTLD), researchers in Italy reported.

"EBV has been implicated in lymphoproliferative diseases in the immunocompromised host, including PTLDs," reported A. Gaeta and colleagues from La Sapienza University. "The present study was addressed to value a diagnostic approach in the monitoring of the EBV infection in organ transplant to early predict the development of PTLD."
