Rapid Autopsy a Potential Option for Acquiring Cells for Research

Scientists at the University of Nebraska Medical Center announced that they have been able to use a rapid brain autopsy procedure to obtain two of the three cell types required for their research into neurodestructive diseases, such as Alzheimer's disease and AIDS-related dementia.

"This is an important first step," said Howard Gendelman, MD, director of the UNMC Center for Neurovirology and Neurodegenerative Disorders. "If further studies indicate that cells obtained in this fashion are useful in our research, a reduction in the amount of fetal tissue from elective abortions needed for the research is possible."
