University to Supply Human Tissue for Research

Duke University Medical Center, North Carolina, will supply human tissue left over from surgery to a private company that will sell it to researchers, an unusual deal that raised questions about a hospital's role in for-profit ventures.

The deal involves the Duke hospital and Ardais Corp., which announced a similar arrangement three weeks ago with Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center in Boston, Massachusetts.

Using the tissue, Ardais will create a nationwide library of samples to sell to genetic researchers. Pooling the tissue samples could help scientists to develop new drugs and other treatments for cancer, heart disease, and other disorders...
