American Red Cross Says Blood Supply Shows Signs of Recovery

The American Red Cross told Philadelphia, Pennsylvania-area hospitals on September 26, 2000, that it is no longer necessary to postpone surgeries for type O patients, but warns that additional blood donations are still needed.

"We have seen a significant increase in the supply of type O blood at area hospitals, but this is still a critical situation," said Geralyn Meny, MD, medical director of the American Red Cross Blood Services Penn-Jersey Region. "I continue to be concerned about the state of the blood supply. Additional blood donations are needed over the next four to six weeks.
