Moderate Increase in Organ Donation Seen in U.S.

The number of organ donors has increased nearly 4% in the U.S. for the first six months of 2000 compared to 1999 according to data provided by organ donor programs to the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS).

At the same time, the number of organ donors in California dropped 13%.

"What's happening in California is certainly a disturbing trend," said Phyllis Weber, California Transplant Donor Network in San Francisco, who represents one of the four federally designated organ procurement organizations in the state.
