Study Findings Result in Deferment of Donors with Medium Risk for HIV

Testing of potential blood donors classified as "medium risk" revealed four with anti-HIV antibodies at a center in Italy. As a result, health officials with the Centro Trasfusionale e di Immunologia dei Trapianti in Milan said they will continue to defer medium risk donors.

They recently reported the findings of their longitudinal, prospective study in the journal Haematologica (C. Silvani et al., "Blood donors with 'medium' or 'minor' risk factors for human immunodeficiency virus infection: Are they eligible for donation'" Haematologica, 2000;85(10):1055-1059).
