Research Paves Way to Detect and Remove Prions in Blood Plasma

Research published in the journal Nature offers new hope for development of detection and removal technologies for pathogenic prions in blood plasma.

The article describes a naturally-occurring blood protein, which selectively and efficiently binds to infectious prions, but not to the normal form. It is believed that neurotoxic prions, acquired by eating beef from cows infected with BSE, are the infectious agents responsible for the brain-wasting illness known as new variant Creutzfeldt Jacob Disease (nvCJD) affecting humans.
