FDA Said Lax on Human Tissue Safety

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration must more aggressively ensure the safety of donated skin, bone, and other human tissue, says a new federal report that found the FDA has never even inspected some tissue banks.

While tissue banking has grown rapidly - and unknown to some families, donated tissue also now is being sold - the U.S. Congress hasn't given the FDA the funding to ensure the work is done safely, says the report by the inspector general of Department of Health and Human Services.

"When this is driven by money instead of for humanitarian reasons, you have to worry," said Sen. Richard Durbin, of Illinois, who asked the inspector general...
