Kidney Model Ready for Use

Before computer simulation, the United Network for Organ Sharing (UNOS) in the U.S. had no tool for estimating the effects of potential organ allocation changes.

While UNOS will always rely upon the best judgment of its committees and Board of Directors, computer simulation provides a critical decision support system that enhances the policy-making process. As the organ shortage grew more severe, the transplant community began to propose policies designed to improve the organ allocation system; however, there were no analytical tools available for estimating the relative effectiveness of these various organ allocation and distribution policies.
