Reducing Plasma Cholesterol Levels Improves Blood's Ability to Carry Oxygen

- by Michael Greer, staff medical writer -- Lowering plasma cholesterol levels can enhance the ability of blood to deliver oxygen to tissue by reducing the thickness of red blood cell membranes, according to researchers writing in the journal Clinical and Experimental Pharmacology and Physiology.

"Oxygen (O2 ) transfer from the blood to tissues is a function of the red blood cell (RBC) O2 saturation (SO2 ), the plasma O2 content being negligible," explained H.
