Apoptosis, Liver Injury More Common in Genotype Ib Hepatitis C Post-Transplant

Viral recurrence of hepatitis C is a well-known problem faced by patients who receive liver transplants for chronic hepatitis C. Often those with hepatitis C genotype Ib suffer more liver damage than those with alternative genotypes. Scientists now say patients with this genotype suffer more liver injury due to apoptosis following liver transplantation than others do.

The finding is the result of a study of 61 biopsy specimens taken from 25 patients who had previously undergone liver transplants because of liver cirrhosis stemming from chronic hepatitis C infection.
