Long-Term Lamivudine Use After Liver Transplant Has Down Side

by Sonia Nichols, staff medical writer -- Though chronic hepatitis B virus (HBV) patients are sometimes given liver transplants to increase survival, following transplantation, the very treatment meant to fight their virus can worsen their liver function.

A long-term study conducted in Israel finds that HBV mutation and liver disease progression are unwanted side effects of taking lamivudine therapy in liver transplant recipients with hepatitis B. The new study was reported in Liver Transplantation.
