Many Hospitals Can Improve Infection Control

by Michael Greer, staff medical writer - Blood safety measures are too lax at many hospitals, putting health care workers at risk for dangerous infections, researchers writing in the journal Infection Control and Hospital Epidemiology warn.

S.E. Beekman and colleagues at the University of Iowa surveyed more than 200 hospitals for information on their bloodborne pathogen safety precautions.

A disturbing proportion of the more than 150 responding hospitals had infrequent safety training for new employees or failed to use basic safety equipment, the authors found.
