Japanese Patients Have High Post-Transplant Lymphoma Rates

by Michael Greer, staff medical writer - Japanese patients who undergo kidney transplantation have a surprisingly high rate of postoperative lymphoproliferative disorders, which may result partly from dialysis-related infections, researchers in Japan report.

"The immunodeficient state [after transplantation] provides a basis for lymphomagenesis, probably through activation of oncogenic viruses," explained Y. Hoshida and colleagues at Osaka University.

Hoshida et al. found that Japanese kidney transplant patients have a high rate of post-transplant lymphomas, and that many of these patients also carry a number of leukemia-causing viruses.
