Blood From Multiparous Donors Linked To Lung Injury

by Michael Greer, senior medical writer - Blood donated by women with multiple children can cause or exacerbate lung injury in intensive care patients, researchers in Sweden warn.

"Transfusion-related acute lung injury (TRALI) and other post-transfusion reactions may be caused by granulocyte and/or HLA antibodies, which are often present in blood from multiparous donors," explained M. Palfi and colleagues at Linkoping University.

Palfi et al. found that blood from women who had given birth three or more times carried a higher risk of negative reactions and provided less benefit to patients.
