Adverse Responses Seen In Patients With Blood Disorders

by Michael Greer, senior medical writer - Multiple blood transfusions can trigger the formation of CTLA-4 antibodies in patients with several hematological disorders and can hasten the progression of these diseases by promoting excessive immune activation, researchers in Italy report.

"A previous study showed that, in multiply transfused patients, an immune response against nuclear matrix proteins can be induced by WBCs [white blood cells] undergoing apoptosis during RBC [red blood cell] unit storage," explained M.P. Pistillo and colleagues at the Institute for Advanced Biomedical Technologies in Genoa.
