Early Testing Completed On Experimental Drug

Results of a small Phase I study suggest a new leukemia drug, R115777, could be an effective treatment.

The research was conducted at the University of Rochester Medical Center and written up for the June 1, 2001, issue of the journal Blood.

Tested on 34 patients, R115777 was less toxic than traditional chemotherapy. In addition, 30% of the patients who took R115777 went into partial or complete remission.

This result was somewhat unexpected, physicians say; early studies of experimental drugs are designed to assess safety, toxicity, and whether the treatment works the way it was meant to work. It's unusual for...
