Weekly Blood Cell Counts May Be Unnecessary

by Michael Greer, senior medical writer - Patients undergoing radiation therapy for cancer often require less blood cell count monitoring than is typically performed, and a less-frequent monitoring schedule could save a considerable amount of money, researchers in the United States report.

Dr. Babu Zachariah, a researcher at the H. Lee Moffitt Cancer Center and Research Institute in Tampa, Florida, and colleagues from other institutes performed a study to "assess the need for obtaining weekly complete blood count (CBC) values and to identify the pattern of changes in CBC during regional conventional fractionated radiotherapy."
